What task do these four freed angels receive?

Revelation 9:15 (ESV)

15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind.

They are not released to do their own thing but are set free for a distinct purpose: they are “to kill” people. Yet there is a limit to how many they may kill, for the Lord sets the ceiling at “a third of mankind.”
