Commentary on Luke 18:3 (Summary)

Luke 18:3 (ESV)

3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’

Jesus introduces a second person to us, namely a widow. Her husband has died, and she is left to fend for herself. This is difficult for her, especially because she has been wronged. It is understandable that she now turns to a judge. Let him judge here. That is how the Lord prescribed it in the law. Deuteronomy 27:19a clearly states this: Cursed is everyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow (see also Exodus 22:21; Isaiah 1:23). Judges, in particular, should represent the Lord himself, who is called the father of the fatherless, protector of widows (Psalm 68:5). Will this actually apply to the judge in the parable Jesus is telling?
