Reliance on the Lord

Isaiah 50:10 (ESV)

10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

All human avenues for coping with the darkness of life will eventually be exposed as inadequate light-bearers, even if there is inherent good in any one of those avenues. But we cannot fix the darkness in our own strength, with our own wisdom. We are instead to trust in and rely upon our covenant God. This is what Christ himself, the Lord’s Servant, did, in our place and for our sakes, so that we are now freed up to do the same, not to prove ourselves but out of grateful devotion. For it is an honour to follow in the footsteps of Christ, which is what leads the apostle Peter to declare, Rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed (1 Peter 4:13). So we trust in the Lord and wait for his time.
