1. Psalm 17:8 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is meant by “the shadow of your wings”?

Psalm 17:8 (ESV)

8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

As with the apple of your eye, this image, known as a zoomorphism, also refers to the Lord’s protective care. The term in its most basic sense refers to the protection of small birds under the wings of a hovering parent (see Isaiah 34:15). Its background is in the Song of Moses, which mentions the spreading out of the wings of the eagle in the context of God’s loving care and safety (Deuteronomy 32:10–12; see also Psalm 36:7; Psalm 57:1; Psalm 61:4; the Lord Jesus also uses the image in Matthew 23:37; Luke 13:34). Given the meaning of the term, the use of the verb hide me is appropriate in this setting. 1 Thus, David comes to the Lord with the recognition that he cannot protect or save himself. He appeals to the Lord as his protector and defender.2
