1. Psalm 17:1–4 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What do we make of the fact that the author is declaring his own righteousness?

Psalm 17:1–4 (ESV)

1 Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!

In this psalm, David prays with a claim of self-righteousness and faithfulness under God’s close examination (Psalm 17:1–4). This can sound like over-confidence, even arrogance. We would dare not talk about ourselves this way, would we? But perhaps that is because of an overemphasis at times on the teaching of man’s total depravity. David is claiming neither sinlessness, perfection, or perfect obedience. Rather, he is declaring his integrity, his innocence, with regard to what he has been accused of. He has done no violence to Saul, his house, and his kingship. All accusations levelled at him are false.
