12And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
In the Hebrew Bible, this is the only place where the words for mourn, weep, and fast occur in the same sentence. It serves to emphasize the grief of David.1 The mourning of David shows his loyalty to Saul and Jonathan,2 as well as his sadness over the battle defeat.
12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
