  2. Exposition

What does it mean to be heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ?

Romans 8:17–18 (ESV)

17 and if children, then heirs heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:17 teaches us that as God’s children we are co-heirs with Christ: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. While the fullness of this inheritance is still in the future, it is already near now!

In Romans 8:18 Paul highlights that heirs of God also share in the suffering of Christ but eventually will also be glorified with him. This inheritance of God’s children is incredibly great: For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. The glory of the Holy One awaits the children of God, even though we are now still under attack and engaged in a struggle with evil because of our weak nature.1
