Structure of 1 Chronicles 10:8–12

1 Chronicles 10:8–12 (ESV)

8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

This paragraph opens and closes with a time reference: the next day and seven days. Two contrasting scenes are presented, the one focusing on the Philistines' desecration of Saul’s corpse and the other on the noble action of the people of Jabesh Gilead, who risked their lives to retrieve the royal bodies and give them a proper burial. The brief account can be divided into three parts:

  1. Discovery of the bodies (1 Chronicles 10:8–9)

  2. Defilement of Saul's body (1 Chronicles 10:9–10)

  3. The loyalty of the men of Jabesh Gilead (1 Chronicles 10:11–12)
