Why was Jesus sitting on the Mount of Olives?

Matthew 24:3 (ESV)

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

The Mount of Olives was outside the city walls, close to the temple. It was a good place from which to observe the city while resting with the disciples. It was also understood to be the place from which the Messiah would come to bring salvation to God’s people and judgment on the wicked (see further Joel 3:12; Joel 3:2; Zechariah 14:1–4).
