Why was Herod struck down?

Acts 12:22 (ESV)

22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”

Herod was familiar with the teaching of the Old Testament that the Lord alone is God and no man must claim such a status for himself. It was thus expected that he would respond to the crowd by correcting their assumption. When he does not do so but chooses to enjoy their accolade, he is struck down by God.1
