What does it mean for the church to be praying in earnest?

Acts 12:5 (ESV)

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Earnest praying suggests that the church was continually and repeatedly asking the Lord to intervene and help Peter.1 Church members were likely encouraged to pray in their own time as well as participating in special times of prayer (as in Acts 12:12).
