Falling to the ground is the typical reaction of human beings when they encounter a visible manifestation of God’s glory (see further Ezekiel 1:28; Daniel 8:17; Daniel 10:9; Revelation 1:17).1 Saul falls to the ground because he is overwhelmed and overcome by one greater than he.2 Though it is generally assumed that Saul was travelling on a horse, there is no mention of a horse in the Biblical text itself.
4 And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
