Commentary on Luke 17:18 (Summary)

Luke 17:18 (ESV)

18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”

Jesus poses yet another question and again his sadness comes through. Only this allogenes, someone from another nation, an immigrant, came back to thank Jesus and so bring honour to God. "Jesus words actually go over the head of the man who has knelt down before him, and toward the listeners: pay attention now! Ten men were healed, and only a Samaritan came back to thank God by giving Jesus praise (the One sent from God). Is that not typical? No one from the listeners will, at this moment, throw him/herself at Jesus’ feet as a supplicant and as one who needs or has received grace...The loud praising of God by the Samaritan at Jesus’ feet causes the silence which is around Jesus in Israel to suddenly become very palpable."1
