Why was there a distinction between the cost of redemption for a man and a woman?

Leviticus 27:4 (ESV)

4 If the person is a female, the valuation shall be thirty shekels.

The variations in valuation for those of different ages and sexes are probably tied to considerations of productive capability. According to Currid , the gender distinction in determining values is probably not because the female is of lower status, but is perhaps based on perceptions of productivity and earning power.1
