1. Leviticus 22:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How do these verses relate to the New Testament?

Leviticus 22:16 (ESV)

16 and so cause them to bear iniquity and guilt, by eating their holy things: for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.”

The priests of Israel were to be careful to guard the food donations given to them by the people. They must not allow an occasion of sin to cause others to fall. These men are the leaders and guardians of the sacred treasure, and they must not let impurity destroy it in any way. In a similar way, church leaders are to guard and protect the flock. Matthew Henry writes, We must not only be careful that we do not bear iniquity ourselves, but we must do what we can to prevent others bearing it. We must not only not suffer sin to lie upon our brother, but, if we can help it, we must not suffer it to come upon him.1
