What does it mean to swear by your head?

Matthew 5:36 (ESV)

36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

To swear by your own head is to hold up your life as collateral should you forfeit your word. 1 Since your life belongs to God, he is also drawn in to such an oath.
