What was the significance of circumcision?

Leviticus 12:3 (ESV)

3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

Circumcision was the sign of the Abrahamic covenant. It represented the covenant relationship between the Lord and the nation of Israel. Hebrew male children bore the sign of belonging to the Lord.
